RIP Roger Moore

Today has gone from bad to worse... Aside from the tragic attack in Manchester, for which I'm sure we all send out heart felt thoughts, I also want to send my little thoughts to the family of my favourite Bond.... Sir Roger Moore

I think it perhaps fitting tribute that just this weekend we enjoyed his dashing portrayal of our favourite double 0 in "The Man with the Golden Gun".

RIP : Richard Hatch

Having just heard the sad news of the passing of Richard Hatch, I'm genuinely saddened... Perhaps best remembered for being in both the original Battlestar and the fantastic re-imagining... He brought a character of menace and quiet perseverance but recognisable motivation to the latter.

I heard the news about his passing only after seeing RedLetterMedia post a rather wonderful snippet of their talking to him about one of the many schlock Sci-Fi titles he was in, and his laugh, his humour tell you more about the man than perhaps we here in the UK had any real idea of.

But, hit that Turbo button and see the stars now... My Apollo.

Little bit stunned by the news of Anton Yelchin's accidental death...

RIP Ronnie Corbett

And it's good night now from them both...

A comedian and entertainer, surpassed perhaps only by the other half of the Ronnie Duet which so defines his legacy, I'm so sad to hear of his passing this morning.

Though many consider his career in terms of his work with the late Mr Barker, Ronnie Corbett was by far the better man in the conversational prose, his work with the audience from a simple seat in the post-light is quintessentially the definition of his comedic genius, and no-one can deliver quite like Ronnie did from that position.

His warmth, passion for entertainment, and quick-wit always shone through, and he'll be missed.

Yet another great gone in 2016.

RIP Alan Rickman

I find myself genuinely surprised and saddened at the news of Alan Rickman's passing.

A talent whom I thought would shine as bright as he always has for a fair few more years yet, taken it seems by the hardest of conditions to beat Cancer.

I hope you all join me in saying "See ya Alan, and thanks for the great times".

RIP Terry Pratchett

There is a low tone to the city he created, even Treacle Mine Road is swathed in straw to soften the rattle of cart wheels, each officer of the Watch sports a black arm band, even the Wizards of Unseen University take note; toasting Sir Terry Pratchett into his eternal stroll over the black sands of the eternal desert of the final night.

At, least that's how I'd like to see Ankh-Morpork react, the place would probably just carry on as normal, save it can't can it, for it existed in Sir Terrys being, and as such the great twin sit, sitting a stride the slow oozing Anhk is now forever quiet.

The Great A'tuin finds itself treading water, and so we say fair well to the world of the disc.

Whether another author dare take up Terry's mantle is yet to be see, but so many questions remain, would Captain Carrot ever have come to terms with being the lost King of the city?  Would Sam Vimes ever retire?  Did Nobby Nobbs ever find love?  Did Sergeant Colon ever finish decorating his Kitchen?

To be sure, we all who read a discworld novel, got to know a part of the world, only Terry knew it all, and he will now be very sadly missed.

Though his writing be brought us so much, through his work with Dementia and Alzeimers Charities he brought great focus onto that terrible affliction, which he himself struggled, and for that we can only salute the greatest of Knights of the Realm we have lost this day.

RIP Richard Kiel

We wish the best to Richard's family, for today one of the great characters from British Filmography passed away, Richard Kiel.

Known, or perhaps renowned for his role as Jaws in two Bond films, we all loved Jaws, as the go to Bond hence man.

Fittingly or not, that Richard's passing has made bigger news in Britain today than the anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks.

RIP Rik Mayall

Alan B'Stard...

Lord Flashheart...

Richard Richard...

Today, the comic genious of Rik Mayall has passed onto that great arena in the sky, and I'm absolutely gutted.  He was one of those permanent and formative comedic characters in my childhood, adolescence and until his untimely knocking for six by a quad bike a big regular presence in my living landscape.

I've had the pleasure of seeing Rik live on stage in several iterations of Bottom!... And will always remember his terrible Norfolk-style accent as he tried to take the piss out of us "Nottingham"... "with your fucking tree and outlaws".

You'll be missed Rik, you clever, funny bastard you!

RIP Colin Pillinger

Sad day when one of the most enthusiastic and interesting folks in the UK Space sciences passes away, Professor Colin Pillinger...

I have the pleasure of owning a copy of this rather rare book of his, and made mention of it on my blog before, in relation to his tense relationship with the UK Space Science establishment.

A great loss to Britain is loosing Professor Pillinger.

RIP Raymond "Jerry" Roberts

Whenever I see a Bletchley code breaker in the news I'm sad the country has yet to fully recognise their work, especially those for whom any recognition came too late.

Captain Roberts here was recently in a BBC documentary about the work of Tommy Flowers, and his own work on breaking Tunny and other codes.

Charlotte Blackman - Landslides

A year ago, I blogged about the tragic day which took the life of our family friend Charlotte.

Yesterday evening her family were featured on Inside Out for the East Midlands, in the UK you can view the program at this link for the next 7 days.

RIP Mel Smith

I am so sad to see the news of Mel Smith passing away, I loved his work, the really strange thing is though... I mentioned him to the wife just yesterday, we were talking about funny things, and one of the funniest things I've seen - least when I was a kid - and it still makes myself and my brother laugh when we mention it, was his playing "Gregorio" the opera singer who has an inadvertent "wank" whilst singing.

To demonstrate, the man himself:

R I P Tony Scott - By Tweet of course....

I've just heard the news about Tony Scott, I await to find out why he has seemingly committed suicide and can only say it is a sad day for both his family and the movie world at large.

But I must also ask, when did it become acceptable for a reporter, specifically the hacks at the BBC to just make a trifle comment and then quote over a half dozen tweets, why is that journalism?... Why is just quoting what a load of other people, on a very informal system, have said news worthy?...

I find the messages themselves fine, but why quote Stephen Fry, Robert Rodriguez, Duncan Jones and all the other peoples from their twitter accounts?... Is it just to name drop?... Something I believe is very much frowned upon in social graces, and this is my problem with it seeing so many tweets reguritated verbatim simply seems like bad form to me, bad social style.

And as much as tweeter seems to be de rigueur at the moment I think we'll one day look back on these reports and it'll sadden us that our news, solid real history happening around us, is being recorded in such a hap hazard, low brow, fashion.

RIP - Jack Tramiel

In my opinion the passing of Jack Tramiel yesterday is more a watershed moment than the passing of Steve Jobs, yet there has been neary a squeek about Jack crashing into the ether of eternity... The father of 8bit computing in the US - with in roads into the UK - where we think of Clive Sinclair and Chris Curry as presenting the UK with affordable 8bit computing, it was Tramiel and his companies (Commodore and Atari) which brought 16bit computing to the UK and world, at affordable prices.

The father, in some ways, of the C64, C16, VIC-20, Atari ST, TT, MegaST, Falcon and all those miriad of Amiga models, the man has a story to rival and even eclipse many other "industry titans", from Auschwitz to California his rise was meteoric, not accidental.

So, I for one say thanks to Jack for his machines, for his life and thanks for all the memories:

Jack Tramiel - 1928 - 2012
